PATSY

NAME: Patsy

ARCHETYPE: The Faithful Sidekick

SUBVERSION: He is, despite his station, pure of heart and unwaveringly loyal. Even when most wouldn’t be.

DESCRIPTION: Patsy is the everyday working-class man that never quite makes it into the legend of King Arthur. He’s got a sort of grounded realism that understands his lot in life and is grateful that it’s not worse than it is, but laments the fact he’s often so overlooked and mistreated.

As a man accustomed to great struggle, he has a determined philosophy that finds a way to endure even the most demeaning of defeats. He lives in a world between pragmatism and optimism, knowing that his Sire depends so heavily on him, but also knowing that his sire unfortunately depends so heavily on him.

Role: Supporting Lead (Male or Female)

Vocal Range: Tenor. A2 to G4

Age: Adult, any age. Can be older than the rest of the cast, or younger than the rest of the knights.

Energy: Loyal, earnest, slightly weary but devoted. Comic deadpan energy. Gruff, unpolished and every-man down to earth vibes.

Movement: Physical comedy. Frequently mimics horse riding while clapping coconuts, follows Arthur closely, reactive body language. Not a great deal of respect for personal space. Hobbles more often than not. Can go into Igor/Gollum.

Vocal Style: Character tenor. Light, sincere delivery with clear diction suited to comedic storytelling. Cockney accent.

Comparable Roles

Role 1: Lefou – Beauty and the Beast

A comedic sidekick whose loyalty to the lead character drives many interactions. The role relies on physical comedy, strong reactions, and supportive presence in musical numbers.

Role 2: Smee – Peter Pan

A loyal comic subordinate who follows a larger-than-life leader while providing warmth and humour. Like Patsy, Smee reacts to the chaos around him and grounds the comedy through earnest loyalty.

Role 3: Baldrick – Blackadder: The Musical

Baldrick has the same worn-down servant energy. Loyal, slightly dim, endlessly following his master through ridiculous situations while absorbing the chaos.

AUDITION TIPS: Patsy needs to be lovable without saying a word, so focus on using your face to really convey some strong endearing emotions during your scenes.
