SIR GALAHAD (DENNIS)
NAME: SIR GALAHAD (Dennis)
ARCHETYPE: The Pure Hearted Believer.
SUBVERSION: Begins as someone with no faith in Arthur, his station or his quest, yet transforms into the ultimate believer who never once questions anything.
DESCRIPTION: Dennis begins as a wildly staunch critic of the power structure in place in England, citing inherent flaws in the systemic oppressive regime as it pertains to the peasants.
However this changes the instant he’s given an opportunity to get power for himself and all semblance of social awareness goes down the drain and Sir Galahad is born, a true believer and zealous follower of Arthur in his quest.
Role: Supporting Male Lead
Vocal Range: Tenor. Approx. C3 to A4. Requires comfortable upper range for romantic parody numbers.
Age: Younger Adult Male
Energy: Earnest, enthusiastic, slightly naïve. Wide eyed excitement at becoming a knight.
Movement: Loose, slightly awkward physicality early as a peasant, becoming more confident and knightlier after the transformation.
Vocal Style: Bright musical theatre tenor with romantic parody flair. Expressive delivery suited to comedic love ballads and theatrical exaggeration.
Comparable Roles
Role 1: Elder Cunningham — The Book of Mormon
Socially outsider energy with a sudden and unprecedented rise to plot relevance. Lives in his own skewed reality.
Role 2: Buddy the Elf — Elf the Musical
A man of clear intention, he says what he thinks with very little to no subtext. Emotionally accessible and open. Believes in his perceived reality, whether through cynicism or idealism pre-post transformation
Role 3: Emmett Forrest — Legally Blonde
A pure figure, whether purely moralistic and politically motivated, or devoted to the cause. He possesses surprising competence and skill that perhaps clashes with his initial appearance in the show.
AUDITION TIPS: Dennis is two characters and we need to see a clear delineation between the two. Try to approach your two scenes as if they’re entirely different roles. Sir Galahad the Pure is a noble and dashing, self-loving Knight, while Dennis is an angry, grotty peasant covered in muck. Try to play them distinctly.
