AUDITIONS

TRACK C

Roles: Brother Maynard | Minstrel 1 | Ensemble Flex

BROTHER MAYNARD

Role Function: Dry religious figure, charisma lacking preacher

Scenes / Moments: Act 2, Scene 10

Energy / Comedy Style:  Reserved, monotone and bland

Voice / Movement: Sanctimonious and unenthused

Key Tasks / Notes: Maynard is dry, boring and bland – which is an ironic contrast given that Arthur and Co have actually seen and spoken to God, who is rather chatty. Maynard reading from his bible should feel like office work.

MINSTREL 1

Role Function: Cheery and dedicated band member singing Robin’s praises, delighting in his shortcomings

Scenes / Moments: Act 2, Scene 3 , Act 2, Scene 5, Act 2, Scene 11

Energy / Comedy Style: Floaty and airy, jolly and jubilant

Voice / Movement: Poetic and reverent.

Key Tasks / Notes: The minstrels are all similarly styled, they should feel almost like clones or a band of identical chorus members that bleed into one character.

AUDITION TIPS:  Maynard needs to be bored without being boring to watch. To him, the nonsensical bible he quotes is his 9-5 desk job, to us it needs to still be weird and whacky. Try to find a way of being dry with your delivery without being uninteresting to watch. You’ll be able to use your face to spice up that passage by reacting to different lines with different levels of expression.
