THE LADY OF THE LAKE
NAME: THE LADY OF THE LAKE
ARCHETYPE: The Diva
SUBVERSION: She is overtly self-aware about her role in the story, and the show at large, but not necessarily about her character itself.
DESCRIPTION: The Lady of the Lake is a character that bridges the gap between legend and myth, actress and character.
She more than any other cast member is aware of her status as a musical theatre character and proudly wears it like a badge of honour.
She is glamour, graceful, and she’ll go from 0-100 in the blink of an eye if she feels that her role is being dealt a disservice or ignored.
She is the quest giver, the mystical sage, but never the damsel in distress. What she lacks in stage time - she more than compensates for with stage presence.
This needs to feel like a performance within a performance with surgically precise moments where the mask drops just a little bit to let the audience in on the thoughts behind her polished Broadway smile.
Role: Leading Female
Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto Soprano E3 to B6.
Age: Adult Woman
Energy: Bold, confident, commanding stage presence with diva like flair. She is the main character in every scene she’s in, according to her.
Movement: Highly theatrical and expressive. Comfortable with choreography and big show stopping staging.
Vocal Style: Powerful, polished musical theatre voice capable of belting and dramatic storytelling. Must be able to emulate a wide range of styles.
Comparable Roles
Role 1: The Witch – Into the Woods
A commanding female presence who controls the stage whenever she appears. Like the Lady of the Lake, the Witch moves between storytelling, commentary, and active participation in the plot. Both roles require a powerful singer with strong personality who can balance comedy with theatrical authority.
Role 2: Velma Kelly – Chicago
A strong, confident musical theatre diva role that demands charisma, vocal power, and command of the stage. While Velma is grounded in a different style of show, the performer qualities required are similar: sharp comic instincts, confidence, and the ability to dominate big show stopping numbers.
Role 3: Miss Piggy – The Muppets
Miss Piggy embodies the same larger-than-life diva energy required for the Lady of the Lake. Both characters command attention the moment they appear, treating every entrance as a show stopping event. They carry glamorous confidence, theatrical flair, and a playful awareness that they are the star attraction. The performer should lean into bold personality, comic timing, and powerful stage presence, delivering moments with the self-assured grandeur of a performer who fully expects the spotlight to follow her wherever she goes.
AUDITION TIPS: There are moments in the show where her mask slips off and you see real frustration underneath the polished showgirl diva, but it has to be controlled. Surgical. Let the panel see what it looks and sounds like when she has had enough of not being in the spotlight.
