True West - Synopsis

True West is the story of two estranged sons of a desert dwelling alcoholic, thrown together whilst one house-sits for their wandering mother.

Written by Sam Shepard and directed by Wayne Moloney, True West is an intense expose of sibling rivalry/jealousy that will leave the audience gasping from the horrifying and hilarious spectacle.

True West is clear, funny and naturalistic whilst also being opaque, terrifying and surrealistic.

Shepard's genius has the ability to make you think you're watching one thing whilst he is simultaneously presenting another.

True West was a 1983 Pulitzer Prize drama finalist and is a chilling reminder that violence can strike from anywhere, even family.

CHARACTERS:
Brothers are on stage for the entire play.

AUSTEN - mid/late 20 to mid/late 30;s Budding screen play writer. Under pressure to complete a script his agent, Kimmer, has studios showing early interest in. College graduate, clean living, conservative, married

with children and the trappings of success.
Enjoying the solitude while minding mothers house. Admires his brother Lee and wishes to re-connect.
Yearns for the freedom Lee enjoys.

LEE - Austen's older brother - early to late 30;s

Aggressive, angry, controlling, given to violence. Desert dwelling, social misfit, petty thief, drunkard. Ekes out a living stealing electrical appliances from upper middle class neighborhoods. Whilst ridiculing Austen's middle class life style, Lee hankers for his brothers security and comfort.
Lee has an idea for a western movie and pressures Austen into writing a synopsis.

Saul Kimmer - Insincere, dollar driven, Hollywood producer.
Kimmer has two scenes, crucial to the plot. Falling under Lees spell, he swallows the western movie idea and drops Austen's project.
Kimmer's action becomes the catalyst that leads to violent behavior between the brothers.

MOM - mid 50s plus
Smartly dressed, lonely and a little unhinged. Confronted by mayhem after her unexpected, early return from sailing the inside passage to Alaska. Mom's only appearance is the final but critical scene when the complexities of the brother's personalities
is fully revealed.
